If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing BIG!

I’ve been told time and time again, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing RIGHT!”  And my response is always, “Meh.”  Because for me, if it’s worth doing…it’s worth doing BIG!

Even if you get it completely wrong.

Here’s my experience of going BIG vs. going RIGHT.

When you go BIG, you’ll get people’s attention.  And whether you succeed or flop, you’ll have a positive impact.

Go RIGHT and succeed

This is also known as the ho-hum, humdrum life.  If you do it “right,” of course you should succeed.  So why would there be any celebration?  Why would anyone care?  Why would anyone bother to take note? You did it “right,” and it worked. Whoop-de-do.

Go RIGHT and flop

In my experience, this is the saddest existence known to mankind.  Because you’ve tried to do it “right”…and flopped.  And the only people who notice are those who play even smaller than you – those who’ve never tried, let alone succeeded.

Go BIG and succeed

Everyone notices the big successes.  Microsoft.  Apple.  Google.  Dell.  And, when you go BIG and succeed, you set an example of how to achieve what other people are looking for.

Go BIG and flop

Everyone notices the big flops, too.  Remember Google Glass?  How about the Microsoft Zune, or their $7 billion purchase of Nokia?  The DeLoren?

You may have to dust off some cobwebs in your brain, because these things aren’t around anymore.  But if you were around when they were being touted as “ground breaking, earth shattering technological marvels,” then you may recall the nearly instant evaporation of all the hype.

Google Glass might be kaput.  But the idea of immersive augmented reality is alive and well in Microsoft’s HoloLens.  Google flopped.  And not Microsoft is next at bat.

And while we’re on the subject of “at bat,” did you know that Reggie Jackson has nearly twice the number of strikeouts as Babe Ruth?  I’m not a big sports fan, and even I recognize the name Reggie Jackson…and he “flopped” TWICE as much as Babe Ruth.

People aren’t interested in mediocre, and as a society, we won’t accept mediocre from our heroes.

And that’s exactly what going RIGHT is about.  It’s about playing small.  Playing it “smart.”  Playing to not lose, not playing to win.

Going RIGHT doesn’t serve anybody.  But whether you succeed or flop, going BIG serves everyone.

How are you going to GO BIG this week?
