It was July 2007. Scorching hot at that time where we live, in South Texas. But for us, it felt great…because we were on our way to Alaska. Well, actually on our way to Seattle to board a cruise ship to Alaska.
I have many great memories from that cruise. There’s one that stands out for me as a great illustration of how a minor shift in perspective can have a huge impact.
It happened at Tracy Arm Fjord. We cruised up this passageway, creeping along at a snail’s pace. Every now and then the klaxon’s going off because a small ice berg got too close. Melissa and I sat on our balcony taking it all in.
As we got closer to the glacier we were stalking, the narrator over the ship’s intercom kept talking about what a marvelous view it was. But I didn’t see it. I mean it was neat and all, but it wasn’t nearly as splendid as the guy was making it out to be. I just didn’t see what all the fuss was about.
And then it happened.
We were at a dead stop, and the captain slowly spun the ship around. And Holy Cow! What a view!
Melissa and I abandoned our balcony suite for the upper deck. We didn’t technically run…but it was really fast walking as we scurried up the ladder to the upper deck.
Standing there at the aft of the ship, just being aware of the awesome beauty and magnificence of the space still brings a bit of a tear to my eye. It was overwhelming awe, reverence, and joy.
And we nearly missed it…because we were sitting comfortably on our balcony…mentally throwing barbs at those who were enjoying what we didn’t allow ourselves to see.
That experience is a great reminder for me of how a small shift in perspective can bring about a massive change in experience…and in results.
